FAQ

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions. Please read through these as they will give you many answers to what is involved in a West Virginia Vacation here in the New River Gorge and will assist you when making your plans and reservations.

What do I need to bring with me?
Along with proper water attire you should bring sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, a waterproof camera if possible, extra clothes, shoes and any personal amenities such as shampoo and extra towels etc. Don’t plan to bring anything valuable on the river with you except for maybe your camera and sunscreen as things sometimes get lost in the river.
What should I wear?
Bring clothing for hot, cold, dry and wet conditions and extra of each. All river safety gear will be provided. Swim suites and cotton tops are fine in mid to late summer, however synthetic materials are recommended in general and especially important during cold weather. Old tennis shoes or river sandals are appropriate footwear.
What if the weather turns bad?
Rarely do we have a need to cancel a trip due to inclement weather and this only occurs if we feel that safety is an issue. We do reserve the right to switch river sections due to water levels.
Is rafting safe?
Your Safety is our number one concern on the New River Gorge and the Gauley River. With West Virginia being one of the most popular states for Americans taking Whitewater rafting trips some of the strictest safety laws are enforced. Before a guide can work professionally they must complete a state mandated minimum number of trips down each river section and be “checked-out” by a senior guide. All river safety equipment is regulated and enforced and will be provided for you here at the outfitter center. As with any activity there are inherent risks involved, we believe whitewater rafting to be a safe, educational, and recreational family experience.
When should I arrive?
We recommend arriving 1 hour prior to the show up time listed on your reservation. This allows you time to park your car, change your clothes, make your way to the outfitters store to check in and sign your waivers before gearing up with paddles, helmets and life jackets, as well as any necessary wetsuits and possibly bathroom breaks prior to boarding the bus.
Where should I report on arrival?
The Outfitters Store.
What will the river conditions be like?
River Conditions vary with Rainfall. In the spring water levels are typically higher than in mid-summer. In the fall the Gauley River runs at a constant flow of 2800 Cubic Feet per Second which is an optimum level for white water rafting.
What if I arrive late?
You could miss your trip. Please plan on arriving one hour prior to your scheduled rafting time.
What else is there to do in the area?
The New River Gorge is home to a multitude of outdoor activities, coal mine tours, rock climbing, white water rafting, horseback riding, and ATV tours as well as great home cooking at some of our local Fayetteville restaurants.
Are there activities for children?
We live in an outdoor adventure playground. From rafting on the calmer sections of the Upper New River to hiking on the rim of the New River Gorge there is something for everyone.
Do I need a fishing license to fish?
Yes you do. These can be purchased in the outfitter store.
What are the air travel options in the area?
Charleston Yeager Airport and Beckley West Virginia both have daily air service to major US cities. Beckley is 20 minutes and Charleston is 1 hour ground transportation from the New River Gorge and our base camp.
